Blue-green algae spreads along Murray River

THE Murray River’s toxic blue-green algae bloom is expected to stretch 700km from Lake Hume to the South Australian border in just weeks.

In what is already one of the nation’s worst ever recorded algae outbreaks, experts say only nature can stop the bloom’s spread, through heavy rain and colder weather.

BENDIGO has suffered through one of its driest February's on record.

The Bendigo Airport recorded only 4.4 millimetres for the month, about 13 per cent of the long-term average.

The skies opened on only three occasions, including a high of 2.4mm on the first day of the month.

Bendigo has gone 27 straight days without a drop rain since 0.2mm fell on February 3.

The system’s more sophisticated option factors in variables such as plant type, soil type and plant root depth, and weather conditions such as solar radiation, temperature, rainfall and wind to estimate soil moisture levels and work out when to trigger watering......"

New housing estates get wise with water

Interesting article on a new estate being built in Melbourne that uses tank water, recycled water and an electronic device connected to the tanks that allows all the tanks to dump their water out when a huge rain event is coming, to prevent flooding.
